Combine independent travel with volunteering in local communities and a conservation project. Get a deeper insight of South Africa while teaching kids computer skills, developing sports and arts talent and using your horse-riding ability in leopard conservation. Travel between projects and tour the country on the ever-popular hop-on hop-off shuttle service, the Baz Bus.
There are 3 different projects to choose from that each run for two weeks – the Urban Humanitarian Project, the Rural Humanitarian Project and the Conservation Project. You can choose to do 1, 2 or 3 projects in any combination.

How this works

and taken to your project
Project 2 – You will be collected from the airport and taken to a backpackers lodge close to the airport on the Baz Bus route - You will receive a Baz Bus ticket on the CPT/JHB or JHB/CPT route

– Spend your first 2 weeks on the volunteer project before travelling on
the Baz Bus towards your next project
Project 2 – You can begin your travels on the Baz Bus towards Chintsa - Stop and sightsee between projects. You have as much time to hop on and hop off at Baz Bus stops between your projects
Project 1 - Cape Town Urban Humanitarian Project
Work with a non-profit welfare organization whose aim is to care for and run
preventative programs for destitute youth and kids from informal
settlements at risk. Educare playrooms and youth cabins have been erected to
accommodate on site programs. Day and night outreach programs assist children
under the age of 18 living on the streets by moving them to a place of safety
or re-uniting them with family. Employment and education opportunities
are also provided where possible.
Your tasks:
- Helping with feeding programs
- Assisting Educare class with preschool kids
- Planning programs, events and outings for the resettled and destiture
- Teaching basic computers skills, reading and swimming

Project 2 - Chintsa, Wild Coast Rural Humanitarian Project

Help VA 32°South develop computer literacy skills among rural children. Volunteers work under
the guidance of highly qualified project facilitators to deliver daily lessons
in the classroom.
VA 32°South also run weekly art sessions with foundation phase learners, an
afternoon sports development program and various community initiatives such
as township clean-ups and adult computer classes.
Your tasks:
- Teaching computer literacy classes
- Sports development
- Art sessions with younger learners
- Community development initiatives
Also included:
- Weekly feedback, troubleshooting and planning sessions
- Free use of canoes and boogie boards
- Surfboard hire and lessons at reduced rate
- Accommodation on the beach

Project 3 - Nelspruit - Conservation Project

Join The Leopard Project in its
aim to condition the leopards in the Kwa-Madwala Private Game Reserve so that
their fear of man is broken
down. This is achieved through the preservation of a safe haven for leopards,
establishing regular feeding habits. This project is an excellent opportunity
for a horseback safari and to work with an equestrian professional.
Your tasks:
- Checking the voltage on the electrical fencing
- burrowed under the fence or other damage has occurred.
Also included:
- 6 x 3 hour game drives on the Kwa Madwala Private Game Reserve
- 1 x 3 hour bush walk.
- 1 x night drive
- An hour elephant-back safari
- A 7.5 minute microlight safari
- Accommodation in a game reserve
