Schools
There is currently a great need for volunteers in the schools in Du Noon, the township of Table View in Cape Town. isiXhosa is the dominant language but classes are conducted in English. Du Noon is a poor, overcrowded area. Volunteers can help at the junior or senior school, or at both. Any skills a volunteer has can be used to teach the children.
- Sophakama Primary School
Students are between the ages of 6 and 12. Volunteers are needed in the following fields: sports coaching especially hockey, arts and culture, producing plays and shows and assisting in the library. Computer literacy is a great skill to teach the children.
- Inkwenkwezi Senior School
Students are between the ages of 13 and 18. Volunteers are needed in the following fields:
sport especially touch rugby, administration, setting up the new library and helping students with remedial classes. Qualifications are an advantage for volunteers at this school to have.
Projects with the disabled
- Cheshire Homes
A home and learning centre for underprivileged and disabled adults and children. Volunteers will help with feeding, shopping, outings, companionship, stimulation programs or teaching residents any skills, like dancing or a sport. This program is very flexible. Volunteers can work as much or little as they want.
Projects with children and babies
- Home of Hope
A non-profit organization for abused, aban- doned, neglected and HIV Babies. Volunteers care, feed and look after the children. A minimum of 8 weeks is required for this program with set shifts of up to 5 days a week.
- TLC
A non-profit organization that goes into the townships and feeds and clothes homeless children. Volunteers will help with feeding, educating and playing with the children and are welcome to run their own education programs in the township. People with skills are welcome to teach those less privileged. This program is very flexible. Volunteers will have to stipulate how many days a week they would like to work and what their skills are before they arrive so a program can be custom designed.
